Integrating Transportation Technologies for a Connected Mobility Ecosystem
Issues
Multiple transportation systems operated in isolation, including traffic signals, transit scheduling, ride-hailing platforms, tolling systems, and freight tracking. Data was not shared across platforms, and user interfaces lacked consistency. Public transport services had no real-time trip updates, and emergency response coordination was delayed due to incompatible dispatch systems. Technology investments had been made in silos, with little interoperability or strategic roadmap.
Solution
We designed a Transport Technology Integration Framework that unified existing systems through open APIs, middleware solutions, and cloud infrastructure. A common data architecture was introduced to standardize inputs across systems. We facilitated a stakeholder-wide digital governance model to ensure inter-agency collaboration. The project also deployed a user-facing mobility dashboard and backend analytics platform to coordinate operations and manage incidents in real time.
Approach
- Conducted a full audit of transport technologies across public and private sectors
- Mapped system redundancies, data gaps, and integration opportunities
- Developed a common digital architecture with interoperability standards
- Implemented middleware connectors for legacy system compatibility
- Proposed role-based data access models for different agencies and providers
- Piloted a unified control center dashboard for buses, taxis, and road networks
- Delivered digital governance framework and training for technology oversight
Recommendations:
- Mandate open API compliance for all new transport technology tenders
- Set up a National Transport Data Exchange to foster innovation and analytics
- Launch end-user apps that consolidate all travel options with real-time updates
- Implement digital incident response workflows with multichannel communication
- Introduce cybersecurity standards for smart mobility systems and platforms
- Use predictive analytics to optimize scheduling and incident prevention
Engagement ROI
Integration reduced system maintenance costs by SAR 21 million annually, while reducing incident response times by 36%. User-reported service satisfaction improved by 41 points, and the consolidated mobility dashboard enabled real-time decision-making across 14 transport departments. The framework supported more than 2.3 million daily data points, allowing for improved forecasting and cross-agency collaboration on future smart city projects.
